RE: NY to Michigan - thru Canada or not?

We are heading to Novi, MI area, and our exit is off of 96W, so we don't need to go as far north as Flint. We appreciate your opinion as to the best route north from Toledo - 75/275 or 23. Thanks.

RE: NY to Michigan - thru Canada or not?

Thanks so much everyone for the good info and suggestions. We really appreciate it. One last question, if we take 75N toward Detroit and then 275N to Novi, do we miss the closures on 75 that were mentioned? Thanks again.

NY to Michigan - thru Canada or not?

This weekend we are heading from Upstate NY to Detroit, MI area and usually would go through Canada, entering in Niagara Falls and entering Michigan at Port Huron. A year ago, we spent 2 hrs. waiting at customs to cross the border and so we are considering alternate route - 90W through Ohio to Toledo and then 75N to Detroit. It is about 2 hrs longer, but if there are still delays at the border, it evens out and rest areas are more frequent in the US. Anyone cross these borders lately? What was your wait time? Any opinions on which route we should take would be appreciated.

Palomino Thoroughbred 26BHSL - quality??

Any input on this company and model with triple bunks and dinette slide. Interested in the 07 or 08. Dont know if it has changed 07 to 08 to 09?? If so, are there any major changes.
The cost seems a little higher than the average similar TT, does the quality match the cost??
Posted a question earlier on the TV needed for this TT, and appreciate the feedback. Essentially, I gathered that one would need a full size SUV or passenger van. (If pickup not wanted).
I would be planning on a prodigy brake control, and Reese HP Heavy duty stabilizer/weight distrib.
TIA

RE: I-90 S. Dakota to Illinois

We are planning a trip from Upstate NY (We live a few miles from I90) out West, heading on I 90 all the way to S. Dakota and into Montana en route to Yellowstone. Thanks for the warning. It clearly sounds problematic, does anyone have a suggestion for a better route? Also, what resources (besides this forum, which is so helpful) can one use to find out whether the non-interstate roads (the 2 lane variety) are big rig friendly?

RE: Route from NJ (Trenton) to Herkimer, NY

We live in Upstate NY and head to Herkimer a few times a year. A good, easy route (RV friendly) is the PA turnpike to 81N to 90E. The Herkimer exit is off of 90. One warning - there is road construction on 81 N in PA between Scranton and Binghamton, NY that could slow you up, and the road can be bumpy. Still, I think that is the best RV route for your trip. If you are going to the Herkimer Diamond Mines, by chance, the KOA is a very nice campground and our son found a couple of sizable "Herkimer Diamonds" last May. Have a great trip!

RE: GVWR 6600, 27ft TT - Opinions on the best TV

The young family weighs less than 500 with kids and dogs included.
Not looking for a truck / flat bed. Would only be interested in an SUV / passenger van at most.
Thanks for the input so far.

GVWR 6600, 27ft TT - Opinions on the best TV

Was looking at a trailer with dry weight 5800, 29ft length but found (based on the feedback here) that one would need a larger TV than desired.
Have scaled down to the following trailer:
Hitch Dry Weight 479 lbs.
Dry Axle Weight 3,817 lbs.
Total Dry Weight 4,296 lbs.
GVWR 6,643 lbs.
Interior Height 76"
Exterior Height 101"
Exterior Width 96"
Travel Length 26' 9"
Will most SUV's be able to tow this. If so, any opinions welcome. Trying to get least expensive TV, with best gas mileage.
Durango, Expedition, Jeep Grand Cherokee.....
Much appreciated.

RE: TV help - 5800 lb TT - looking for SUV

thanx for the input. looking cheap and looking used ---
would any of these work???
Ford E350 Club Wagon XL
8cyl 5.4 L 2004
12 Pass
Chevy G3500 Exprs Ext Base
8cyl 5.7 L 2002
15 Pass
Dodge B3500 Ram
Maxi 2000
8 Cyl 5.9 L
15 Pass
Dodge B3500 Ram
Maxi 2000
8 Cyl 5.2 L
12 Pass
assume the higher 4.1 axle ratio.
I'm figuring 8k tow capacity would be needed to be comfy, and the 130in wheelbase.
From what I was able to find these wouldnt fit the bill, but not sure if I'm getting the right info. I mainly used the trailerlife tow guide info.

RE: TV help - 5800 lb TT - looking for SUV

TT is 28'9"
So, your opinion would be that even with a Tow capacity of 8k, an expedition would not have the wheelbase or power to tow this TT comfortably --- correct??
the above comment mentions expedition -- presumably talking about the expedition EL ??

TV help - 5800 lb TT - looking for SUV

Prospective Trailer is:
Forest River Salem 26TBSS
Hitch Weight - 805lb
Dry Ship Weight - 5880lb
GVWR - 7805lb
Looking for TV thats not diesel, not a flat bed.
Essentially looking for an SUV.
Assuming 1,000 lbs. stuff
400lbs of passengers
130lbs of dogs
water tank empty.
Fairly flat terrain.
Mainly a question of comfort in the drive and sway.
Not too worried about blasting up hills, just enough to get up the hills and not trash the TV
TIA

RE: 5er to Class A for the Family. Worth it?

We moved from a TT to a Newmar Canyonstar bunkhouse model last year. As others have posted, I will just reconfirm, we would never go back given the ease of set up/break down, the fun of the journey in the MH itself, etc. I was extremely uncomforable driving the 31ftTT/SUV combo, but I LOVE driving the MH. We've got the Workhorse W22 chassis and have been very pleased with the power. I don't know much about Fleetwood, but our experience with Newmar has been wonderful. They may be worth your looking. The product is high-quality and the customer service is excellent. Good luck with your decision!

RE: Bunk House Class A's

We went with a Newmar Canyon Star 3644 with a totally separate bunk room. At the time, only National (surf side or sea side??) and the newmar had a separate bunk room.
We love the layout, and couldnt imagine having the kids in the hallway. The privacy and total freedom to roam the coach is great.
Unfortunately the 3644 is no longer made and National is in bankruptcy. Not sure if anyone else makes the layout, but I would recommend looking.
Good luck.

RE: Furnace failure - Brrrrrr!!

funny that this should come up months after op, as we are on our way back to factory. although I thought the mystery was solved it wasn't.
weve now replaced control board, tstat, checked propane, tightened electode and still not working.
based on prior posts were going to ask for a new furnace. well see.

RE: How long does it take you to dump....

Thx for your replies. I believe the issue is actually a design flaw as there is a huge amount of pipe coming from the tanks and originally they were essentially parallel to ground.
With added pitch it immediately cut down 15min on the dump time and I suspect more pitch is needed but may be physically impossible do to design. I know that there is no blockage as they have checked that out.
I'm bringing the unit back to factory for them to look at this issue next week. Thanks for confirming that 5 minutes is about the max it should take just to dump.

How long does it take you to dump....

your tanks:W
I ask because when we purchased the coach (newmar canyon star 08) it would literally take about 1/2 hour. We had them add some blocks to improve the pitch and now will still take about 15min. There is about 10 feet of tube between the tanks and the dump.
It helps if we are level or leaned toward the dump site, but this is not always possible if waiting on line to empty.
This is not an issue if we have full hookup, but if we are on a line, people are not going to be too happy if we take 15+ minutes.
Any other tips or suggestions for speeding up the process?

Novus plastic clean and shine.
No personal experience, but the write ups look good for this sort of issue.
